EAST CHICAGO, Ill. - A penalty kick in the 84th minute proved to be just what the Trojans needed to come away with a point in an important CCAC road match, as Trinity International competed to a 2-2 draw with Calumet St. Joseph Saturday afternoon. Junior Melissa Loretto scored her third goal of the season with the penalty, evening the score with just minutes before the end of regulation.
The Trojans (6-4-2, 2-2-2 CCAC) needed equalizers in two different situations against the Crimson Wave. CCSJ got on the scoreboard first, with a 32nd minute strike from Katy Schmidt, and assisted by CCSJ's Sandra Narvaez. The low-scoring first half would end with the Crimson Wave holding the 1-0 advantage, although possession seemed to be fairly even, with Calumet St. Joseph holding a narrow 5-4 edge on shots taken. Trinity earned a pair of corner kicks in the first half, but was unable to convert.
Senior Nikki Roeder brought her team back into the game after intermission, with a 53rd minute goal. The Racine, Wisc. native put away TIU's third corner kick of the match, when Loretto served the ball just past the Crimson Wave keeper, who went out to try to intercept the pass.
The stalemate continued for the next 20 minutes, until Calumet St. Joseph earned a free kick off a TIU foul. CCSJ's Patty Diaz headed home Carly Bermes kick in the 73rd minute, putting Calumet back in front, 2-1.
With less than eight minutes to play, the Trojan attack drew the foul inside the penalty area, leading to Loretto's match-tying kick. The two sides played through 20 minutes of extra time, with TIU firing the only two shots of the overtime periods. Morgan Elzinga took a pair of cracks at the potential game-winning goal, forcing the CCSJ keeper to make a save in the 94th minute, then firing off target in the 104th.
The draw marks the first game in the last nine for the Trojans in which sophomore Samantha Yasatan did not end up on the scoresheet. Her last match without a goal scored game on Aug. 30 against Greenville (Ill.).
The Trojans will have a full week off before they hit the pitch again; TIU will prepare for its Senior Day match, on October 19, when they face off against Cardinal Stritch. Kickoff is set for noon at Schartner Field.
