BANNOCKBURN, Ill. - The Trinity International Trojans put on a dominant performance to stay unbeaten in 2013, beating the Greenville Panthers 3-0 Saturday afternoon. Three different Trojans scored in the win, as the balanced TIU attack scored multiple goals for the third straight match.
Trinity got the scoring underway early, as Morgan Elzinga (Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc./Lincoln HS) scored on a pass from freshman Layla Zahniser and junior Melissa Loretto (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson HS) in the ninth minute. Zahniser, a Greenville native playing against her hometown team, fed the ball to Elzinga from the left side of the pitch to make it an early 1-0 Trojan lead.
Loretto wasn't finished distributing scoring chances either, as the junior made a pass inside the box to freshman Brianna Bernholdt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East HS) for the Trojans' second goal of the game in the 40th minute.
Following a dominant first half that saw TIU outshoot the Panthers 10-1, the attack didn't let up in the second half. Trinity again outshot Greenville, 10-2 after the halftime break, including a total of 13 shots on goal throughout the match.
After assisting on the first two goals, Loretto got in on the action herself, scoring her second goal of the season in the 84th minute. Abbey Wagenmaker (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and Samantha Yasatan (Racine, Wisc./J.I. Case HS) assisted on the play, that capped off the victory for TIU.
With the win, the Trojans improve to 3-0 in the early portion of the season. Bernholdt and Loretto finished the match in a tie for the team lead, along with Yasatan, with two goals scored this season.
Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Burzynski (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Barrington HS) collected her first clean sheet of the year, and improved to 3-0 on the year as well. The Trojan keeper has posted a 0.67 goals against average this season, while seeing an average of three goals of support on offense.
The Trojans will look for their fourth victory of the year this Friday, when they host non-conference opponents St. Ambrose (Iowa). Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m., and will be webcast live at tiutrojans.com.
