NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Trinity International Trojans enjoyed their highest offensive output of the season on Friday night, but ultimately drop the first of two games for TIU in Nashville, 3-2 in double overtime, to NCAA Division II foes Trevecca Nazarene. The Trojans led 2-1 in the second half, but a pair of unanswered scores from Trevecca forced overtime, then closed out the match with a golden goal in the 102nd minute.
Trevecca Nazarene (2-1-1) opened the match with a quick strike, as TNU's Matt Raines scored off the rebound in the ninth minute, following one of Sean Avila's (Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton HS) 11 saves in the match. Trinity International was able to find the equalizer before the half, as junior Steven Hoeflich (Carpentersville, Ill./Westminster Christian HS) put away his first goal of the season in the 37th minute.
TNU seemed to dominate possession in the first half, outshooting the Trojans 12-4 before the break, and taking five corner kicks compared to the pair of corners TIU earned.
The Trojans (0-3-1) briefly grabbed the lead in the second half, as sophomore Erik Yamane scored from close range in the 54th minute. Yamane gave Trinity the 2-1 lead while scoring his second goal of the season.
Just over one minute later, Trevecca were able to tie the match at 2-2, as TNU's Matthew Esquivel scored, again off the rebound, in the 55th minute. Both sides were unable to earn a third goal in regulation, as TIU went to overtime for the second time in the fourth game this season.
Jonathan Baskin ended the match in the 102nd minute for Trevecca, with a header from the crossing pass from the right side of the goal during the second overtime session.
The Trojans will immediately begin to prepare for their second match of the weekend, when they face Cumberland (Tenn.) on the second day of the Trevecca Nazarene Invitational. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
