TIU Men's Basketball falls to Calumet St. Joseph

WHITING, Ind. -- Sophomore guard Sam Salem led the Trojans with 15 points, but Trinity International ultimately fell to the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave, 80-67, Wednesday night. The Trojans struggled to get into an offensive rhythm, shooting 37.9% from the field (25-of-66), while the Crimson Wave shot 50.0% (28-56) on the night.

Calumet St. Joseph (11-10, 4-8 CCAC) scored the first six points of the game, and held the lead the rest of the night. The first of Salem's pair of three-pointers briefly tied the game at 6-6, but the Crimson Wave quickly reclaimed the lead with seven unanswered points. Freshman Sean Smith capped off a run for the Trojans (3-18, 1-9 CCAC) by tying the game again, at the 9:47 mark of the first half. CCSJ went on to hold a six-point advantage at the half.

After CCSJ maintained a double-digit lead throughout most of the second half, the Trojans closed the gap to just seven points with 4:27 to play, as Salem connected on the layup while drawing a foul, then hitting the free throw to complete the three-point play. The Crimson Wave would outscore TIU 12-6 over the final three and a half minutes, to finish out the game, 80-67.

Freshman Blake Mann also reached double figures on the night, scoring 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Justin Peeples matched a career high with six assists on the night.

Trinity International returns home this Saturday, February 1, when they host Roosevelt .Tipoff against the Lakers is set for 7:30 p.m.
