FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Four players finished in double figures, led by senior
Nate Ball's game-high 20 points, as Trinity International earned a win from about as far away from home as you can get, in an 83-73 exhibition win over the Alaska Nanooks.
The Trojans overcame a four-point deficit at the half to outscore the Nanooks 43-29 after the break. "I'm really proud of the way we fought," said TIU head coach Boomer Roberts after the game. "We did a better job guarding the ball, and we hit big shots in big moments."
Trinity used a 10-0 run in the early stages of the second half to retake the lead, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from sophomore guard
Thomas Amrine. Amrine finished with 15 second-half points, to help keep his team in front down the stretch. TIU put the game away with another 10-point run, capped by a pair of free throws from Ball with 3:09 to play, giving the Trojans a 78-67 lead to work with in the closing minutes.
Amrine finished with 18 points on the night,
Justin Peeples collected 13 points, while
David Chatman posted 12 points in the win.
While the win doesn't count in the standings, Friday's performance marks a change of momentum for a team that is looking to end it's three-game slide when it opens up CCAC play on Wednesday, November 19, at home against Roosevelt. "UAF only lost two home games all year last season, so for us to come in here and earn a win was big for our program against a Division II program," said Roberts. "We know tomorrow will be another good test, but we will be ready to play."
The Trojans and Nanooks tip off in tomorrow's rematch, beginning at 4:00 p.m. CST.
