Turnovers key in Trojans loss at Indiana-Northwest
Trinity International starts out strong, but mistakes on the offensive end help drop the Trojans, 58-36.
Box Score GARY, Ind. -- Freshman point guard Arielle Miree was the lone player in double figures, with a team-high 11 points, as the Trinity International Trojans suffered a low-scoring, 58-36 loss at Indiana-Northwest on Monday night. TIU committed 31 turnovers, their second-highest total of the season in the loss, leading to 26 points for the RedHawks.
The Trojans (3-20) got off to a strong start, and led by as much as eight points in the opening minutes. Senior Abigail Hemmeger opened the game with her jump shot just eight seconds into play, then followed that up with a three-pointer on the next possession, giving TIU a 5-0 lead within the first 90 seconds of the game.
After Miree connected on a trey of her own, JaToya Woods stretched the Trojan lead to eight with a steal followed by a fast-break layup, making it a 10-2 game at the 16:52 mark of the first half.
The RedHawks (17-8) answered with seven straight points, pulling to within one point of the Trojans with 15 minutes to play in the first half. A pair of Clarissa Woodard free throws briefly put TIU ahead 12-9, before another 7-0 run gave Indiana-Northwest the lead for good at the 12:35 mark of the first half.
The IUNW lead stretched to double-digits with a three-pointer from RedHawk Rebecca Theriault at the 5:31 mark, as part of an overall 13-0 run for Indiana-Northwest. The Trojans would go into the halftime break trailing 38-23, thanks in part to 18 RedHawk points off 12 turnovers.
TIU was never able to put a run together to climb back into the game during the second half, as the RedHawks maintained a lead of about 20 points the rest of the way.
The Trojans did out-rebound Indiana-Northwest, 42-41, and pulled down 15 offensive boards, leading to seven second-chance points.
As TIU's second-leading scorer, Hemmeger collected eight points on the night, going 3-for-13 from the field, including a 2-for-6 performance beyond the arc. The senior also recorded four assists and five steals.
