PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Senior Abigail Hemmeger collected a team-high 12 points, but a slow start for the Trinity International Trojans proves too much to overcome, falling to the Trinity Christian Trolls 79-52 in a CCAC matchup Saturday afternoon. TIU played well in the second half, but fell behind by as much as 27 points at halftime, and were unable to work their way back into the game.
After Trinity Christian scored the first points of the day less than 15 seconds into the game, Hemmeger's first of six field goals tied the early score at 2-2. The Trolls (7-18, 3-11 CCAC) answered with seven straight points as part of a 15-2 run, building a lead they would hold the rest of the game.
Back-to-back layups from Basha Ramsey and Clarissa Woodard would briefly bring the Trojans (3-19, 0-14 CCAC) to within ten points, 20-10 at the 11:37 mark of the first half. Trinity Christian would go on to outscore the Trojans 25-8 to close out the first half, to take a 45-18 halftime lead.
Trinity International got into more of a rhythm after the halftime break, playing the Trolls to an even 34-34 score in the second half. Hemmeger posted ten of her 12 points in the second half, going 5-of-8 from the field during that time.
Senior Clarissa Woodard nearly picked up what would have been her fifth double-double of the season, posting nine points and 10 rebounds on the day. Freshman Rachel Carter pitched in with eight points off the bench, going 3-of-4 from the field.
The Trojans will travel to Gary, Ind. next Monday, February 10, to take on the Indiana-Northwest RedHawks. Tip-off of the game originally scheduled for Jan. 4 is set for 7:00 p.m.
