Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- Facing a pair of rematches from earlier in the week, the Trinity International Trojans dropped both games on Thursday morning, 9-1 to the Ave Maria (Fla.) Gyrenes, then 16-3 to the Spring Arbor (Mich.) Cougars, as part of their spring break road trip in Florida. The Trojans hit a season-high seven hits in the second game against the Cougars, but a 12-run third inning proved too much to overcome.
In the opening game, TIU (0-6) took an early lead when a pair of Ave Maria errors allowed Jaime Weaver to get aboard and move to third during the first inning. A passed ball allowed Weaver to give the Trojans a 1-0 edge.
The defense struggled to maintain the lead however, as the Gyrenes (13-15) rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning. In all, Ave Maria would score nine unanswered to claim the 9-1 win. The Trojans recorded two hits in the five-inning game, asSamantha Payne and Ashley O'Brien each picked up singles.
As the home team in the second game of the day, Trinity found itself trailing 2-0 after a pair of first-inning runs went up on the board for Spring Arbor (7-3). TIU answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of leadoff singles from O'Brien and Weaver; both Trojans were then driven in on a groundout from Melodee Aguirre, and a single from Jamie Stanton, respectively.
The Cougars briefly grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the second, as the Trojan offense was unable to respond. In the third, however, Spring Arbor blew the game wide open with 12 runs, including five unearned runs from four TIU fielding errors.
In the bottom of the fourth, Payne was driven in by Tina Lebar's two-out single, after leading off the inning with a double. Payne finished the day by going 2-for-3 with a single, double, and run scored. Weaver went 3-for-5 over the two games, including a 3-for-3 performance against the Cougars that included a pair of singles, a double, and a run scored.
The Trojans will wrap up the current road trip on Friday, when they take on the Marian (Ind.) Knights and Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) Cougars. First pitch in Florida is set for 8:00 a.m. Central (9:00 a.m. Eastern).
