DEERFIELD, Ill. --A pair of big offensive outbursts led to a doubleheader sweep on Friday afternoon, as the Trinity International Trojans fell to the Roosevelt Lakers, 9-1 in game one, followed by a 20-3 decision in game two.
The Trojans (0-22, 0-14 CCAC) held an early lead in the opening game, after
Ashley O'Brien reached base safely after a dropped third strike. O'Brien then advanced on a pair of groundouts, and scored on a wild pitch to give TIU the early 1-0 lead.
Roosevelt (18-23, 9-7 CCAC) tied the game in the top of the second, then took the lead with another run in the top of the third inning. A six-run rally put the opener out of reach, as the Trojan offense was slowed to just one hit in the game, coming with one out in the fifth inning from
Breanna Hansen.
The Lakers didn't waste any time in the second game, jumping on the Trojans for 13 runs in the first inning. Roosevelt held a 17-0 lead going into the bottom of the third, when Trinity struck for its biggest rally of the day.
Victoria Livingston and
Breanna Hansen led the inning off with a walk and single, respectively, and were then driven home on a 2-RBI double from
Samantha Payne. Two plays later, Payne scored on a two-out double from
Jamie Stanton. Roosevelt capped the scoring with three more runs in the top of the fifth to complete a 20-3 final score.
The Trojans are back in action on Tuesday, April 22, when they travel to Whiting, Ind., for a CCAC doubleheader with the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
