TIU Baseball falls in series opener with Judson
Box Score | Season StatsDEERFIELD, Ill. -- Facing the CCAC-leading Judson Eagles in their next-to-last home date of the season, the Trinity International Trojans struggled to find the timely hit, falling to Judson 7-2 on Friday afternoon at the TIU Baseball Field. The Trojans collected nine hits on the day, but left nine runners on base in the loss.
After a sacrifice fly in the top of the first gave the Eagles (35-15, 19-4 CCAC) an early lead, freshman
Jeff Lindberg led the bottom half of the frame off with a double down the left field line. Lindberg would go down on a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play, ending the strongest TIU threat in the early few innings.
Judson added another run in the top of the 3rd, on three straight singles to open the inning. The Eagles then added three more runs in a fourth-inning rally, and tacked on another run in the fifth to build up a 6-0 advantage.
The Trojans (10-26, 6-17 CCAC) got on the board in the bottom of the 7th, scoring a pair of runs on three hits. Pinch-hitters
Jon Debowey and
Evan Athanasiou set the table with a pair of one-out singles, then
Cameron Stanley and
Rafael Mendez collected an RBI apiece with back-to-back singles.
TIU would collect just one more hit over the final two innings, unable to complete the comeback run. Judson added one more run in the top of the eighth to come away with the 7-2 win.
Three Trojans finished the day with two hits, as Stanley, Mendez, and
Adam Vignola all finished 2-for-4 in the game. Vignola extends his hitting streak to eight games, the team's longest current streak at this point in the season, while Stanley records his team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the year.
The Trojans finish out the three-game series with Judson on the road, as they travel to Elgin for a doubleheader against the Eagles on Saturday, April 26, beginning at 1 p.m.
