Box Score 2 CHICAGO, Ill. -- In a doubleheader originally scheduled for their home field, the Trinity International Trojans had plenty of opportunites at the plate but couldn't cash in, as TIU fell to the Saint Xavier Cougars, 9-4, and 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans left nine runners on base in the first game, and 13 in the second as St. Xavier finished out the three-game series with three wins.
The Trojans (4-15, 1-6 CCAC) got off to a strong start, when Evan Athanasiou led the bottom of the first off with a single up the middle. The shortstop then scored three plays later, when A.J. Bruner reached base on an SXU error. Trintiy International then tacked on three runs in the third inning, highlighted by Adam Vignola's 2-RBI double and Andrew Grotelueschen's RBI single, putting the Trojans ahead 4-2 at the end of three innings.
Freshman Jeff Lindberg pitched four strong innings after getting the start, not allowing a hit until the third inning. The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the third inning to briefly take a one-run lead, but a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning put SXU comfortably ahead for good.
The bats went quiet at the start of the second game, as TIU failed to safely reach base until Cameron Stanley's fourth-inning double. Stanley went on to score on an error by the Cougars, when the ball got away from the fielder on a pickoff attempt by the catcher.
Pitcher Adam Gomski put up five solid innings, allowing six runs on the day. The Trojans had plenty of chances to cut into the SXU lead, but went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the game. The TIU bullpen also had some strong performances, as Nick Robinson, Jeremiah Carter, and Ryan Helmeid combined for four shutout innings and just three hits.
The Trojans will now host Cardinal Stritch on Monday, April 7, in a makeup game originally set for March 28. First pitch between TIU and the Wolves is set for 3:30 p.m. at the TIU Baseball Field.
