Trojans drop match at Roosevelt in straight sets

CHICAGO, Ill. - Senior Samantha Stoller and freshman Mickayla Staal each finished with a team-high six kills, but a tough night overall for the Trinity International offense sees the Trojans fall on the road Tuesday night to the Roosevelt Lakers, 3-0.

The Trojans (8-7, 1-2 CCAC) hit for a -.077 attack percentage, collecting 19 kills but also committing 26 errors on the night. In the opening set, the Lakers were able to jump out to a 9-4 lead, with all four Trojan points coming on RU service errors. Roosevelt closed out the first set by taking 16 of the last 17 points for a 25-6 win.

A quick 6-2 run in the second set tied the score at 9-9, highlighted by a pair of kills from Staal. The Trojans were unable to capitalize on the momentum, however, as Roosevelt took the next four points to reclaim the lead the rest of the way, taking the second game, 25-16.

The third game was the closest battle of the night, with the Trojans making a late push to try and extend the match. Trailing 23-17, Stoller put down her sixth kill of the night to force the side out. Julie Gregornik dealt out a pair of service aces to go along with a Laker service error to close the gap to 23-21. A Trojan blocking error on the next point forced match point, however, which the Lakers closed out on a TIU attacking error, 25-21.

For the tenth straight match, and the 14th time this season, Junior Gabrielle LaMonaca reached double figures in digs, collecting 16 against the Lakers. Setter Marissa Boelter collected a team-high 14 assists.

The Trojans will step outside of conference play this Friday, September 26, when they travel down the road to face Lake Forest (Ill.). The match against the NCAA Division III foe is set for 7:00 p.m.
