Trojans continue winning ways with comeback over Peregrines

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Overcoming an eight-point halftime deficit, the Trinity International Trojans kept the momentum rolling from the past few weeks, earning their sixth straight win, 70-62 over the Purdue-Calumet Peregrines at home on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Justin Peeples led the way, scoring a game-high 26 points, including a 19-for-20 performance from the free throw line.

The Trojans (8-10, 4-5 CCAC) jumped out to a ten point lead in the opening minutes, as six different Trojans got into the scoresheet during a 16-6 run. The Peregrines (8-10, 3-5 CCAC) fought their way back, however, scoring 10 of the next 12 points over a four-minute run to pull to within a point after PUC's Noah Allen connected on one of his four three-pointers at the 9:26 mark of the first half.

Both teams traded the lead back and forth five times before the halftime break, but Purdue-Calumet would finish the half on a 9-1 run, stretching their narrow lead into an eight-point advantage, 35-27. Trinity struggled to find their shot in the first half, shooting 32.1% (9-28) from the field, and just 20% (2-10) from three-point range.

TIU would get back into the game by dominating the defensive end in the second half; the Trojans forced seven Peregrine turnovers in the first five minutes of play, erasing the halftime deficit with a layup from Nate Ball with 15:02 remaining, and tying the score at 37-37. In all, TIU forced 22 turnovers in the win, but committed just nine on the offensive end.

Neither side could take more than a two-point lead until Thomas Amrine's three-pointer at the 6:43 mark, on an in-bounds play from the other end of the court, giving the Trojans a 60-55 edge. Over the final six minutes, Peeples would put the game away, scoring the team's final ten points, all on trips to the free throw line. The Chicago native shot a perfect 18-for-18 from the stripe in the second half, icing the game in the closing minutes.

"It was a great team win for our program," said head coach Boomer Roberts after Saturday's win. "I'm very proud of the way our guys show their love for each other, and love for Christ on the court. God is good!"

Amrine was the only other Trojan in double figures on the day, collecting 17 points. Ball posted a team-high seven rebounds to lead TIU.

The Trojans will now hit the road for a pair of CCAC matchups next week. TIU will take on Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais on Wednesday, January 21, then face off against the Purdue-North Central Panthers next Saturday, January 24.
