Late rally pushes Lakers past Trojans

CHICAGO, Ill. -- With a ten point lead at the half, and leading with less than four minutes to play, the Trinity International Trojans went cold down the stretch, falling to the host Roosevelt Lakers 66-59 on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans played the final 4:36 without a field goal, as the Lakers finished on a 13-0 run to steal the win.

Nate Ball finished with 22 points to lead the Trojans, recording his fourth double-double of the year by recording 11 rebounds. Justin Peeples was the only other Trojan to finish in double figures, with 11 points.

"We taste something tonight we hadn't experienced in a long time, which was struggling to finish," said head coach Boomer Roberts after the game. "Roosevelt made some very difficult shots, but that is what good teams do. They don't beat themselves - you have to earn it, and we didn't."

The Trojans jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the opening four minutes, but the Lakers came back to tie the game at 14-14 at the 13:39 mark. James Glass put his team back in front on the next possession, and TIU would go on to lead the rest of the first half. Trinity would move ahead by as much as 13 points before the break, when Ball made it a 38-25 game with 2:44 on the clock.

TIU would take a ten-point lead into the halftime break, led by Ball who posted 15 points in the first half.

Roosevelt would begin the second half by slowly erasing their halftime deficit. RU's Kevin Priebe tied the game with his layup at the 11:36 mark, making it a 46-46 game. Ball would answer with four straight points to start a quick 8-0 run for the Trojans to move back in front.

Ball's score with a little over four and a half minutes remaining gave TIU a six point lead, 59-53. The Trojans wouldn't score again the rest of the way, as the Lakers tied the game with 3:06 to play, on their way to a 66-59 final score.

"Nate was great, but some of our key guys had off nights, which is credit to Roosevelt," said Roberts. "I thought our defense was good enough to win the game, but you're not going to beat anyone in our league shooting 25% in the second half. We'll watch the film and get better, because we have another great opponent on Wednesday."

The Trojans are back in action again on Wednesday, when they travel to Cardinal Stritch on February 4. Tipoff against the 21st-ranked Wolves is set for 7:30 p.m.
