DEERFIELD, Ill. - In the final match of the 2015 season, Trinity International took the visiting Judson Eagles the distance, but an early lead in the decisive fifth set proved to be enough as the Trojans fell in five, 25-21, 26-28, 25-12, 20-25, 15-11, Thursday night inside Van Dixhorn Arena.
Box Score | Season StatsTwo Trojans finished with double-doubles on the night; senior setter
Suzanne Knudtson dealt out 35 assists while recording 19 digs, and
Marissa Boelter picked up 12 kills with a team-high 24 digs.
Trinity nearly took a nip-and-tuck first game, as a late 6-2 run capped by kills from
Alida Knudtson and Boelter tied the score at 21-21. Judson answered with three kills and a block however, to take the opener, 25-21. The Trojans responded in the second game, another close one where TIU held a 22-20 advantage. The Eagles reeled off four straight points to take set point at 24-22, but a kill from
Alida Knudtson and a Judson error tied the score. Judson would earn two more set points that would be denied, before three straight TIU kills would tie the match at 1-1.
The third would go to the Eagles, as the Trinity attack hit for a negative percentage in the set. Leading two sets to one, Judson were unable to close out the match, hitting for a negative percentage themselves in the fourth set while the Trojans would pick up 13 kills en route to a 25-20 win.
Two quick rallies would give the Eagles an advantage in the fifth, when Judson picked up five of the first six points to start the set, and again when leading 7-5, JU would score five straight to take a 12-5 lead. Trinity would pull the deficit back to within two, thanks to a
Mickayla Staal kill and an ace from
Gabby Miller. The Eagles would hold on with three of the next four points to clinch the match, 15-11.
Alida Knudtson led both squads with 20 kills on the night, setting a new career high. Five Trojans finished in double figures in digs, led by Boelter's 24, and followed up by Miller with 20,
Suzanne Knudtson with 19,
Becca Kowalczuk with 17, and freshman
Taylor Weinberger with 16.
