Luke Mead matched Kirschbaum with a team-leading 16 points while flirting with a triple-double, finishing with eight assists and five rebounds, all three season-high totals.
"It's tough to get a CCAC win any time, but I especially respect the toughness of Roosevelt and Coach Griffin, so we're even more thankful for it," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts after the game. "[Mead] played his best game of the year, and we don't win this game without
Zach Kirschbaum. He was agressive, and when he does that he's a special player."
Both sides traded the lead back and forth ten times over the first eight minutes of play, with neither team building more than a three-point advantage. The Trojans (8-3, 2-1 CCAC) moved in front for good during a 10-0 midway through the first half, kicked off by
Grant Corsi's putback with 13:09 on the clock.
Sean Smith and
Thomas Amrine then hit back-to-back threes, and the Trojans took a seven-point edge on Kirschbaum's bucket at the 11:02 mark, making it a 23-16 ballgame. TIU would go up by as much as 13 points before heading into the halftime break leading 45-34.
"Sean was a tremendous leader tonight, and
Greg Carlyle made great decisions with the ball, which is what we need from him," said Roberts.
The Lakers (3-5, 1-2 CCAC) would trim the lead down to six points in the second half, 68-62, on Kyle Bumbalough's fast-break with 9:01 remaining. Mead answered with back-to-back threes to put the Trojans back in front by double-digits. Trinity would close the game by outscoring the visitors 15-8 over the final five minutes to secure their third win in their last four games.
James Glass finished with 14 points on the night, while Corsi and Smith each collected 13 points.
The Trojans return to Van Dixhorn Arena on Saturday, when they host the Purdue-Calumet Peregrines. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
