Women's Basketball fall short in upset bid over #14 Peregrines

DEERFIELD, Ill. - Trinity International knocked down a season-high ten three-pointers on one end of the floor, and forced a season-high 31 turnovers on the other, but ultimately came up just short Saturday afternoon, falling at home to the 14th-ranked Purdue-Calumet Peregrines 68-61.

Box Score | Season Stats

Nika Bracun and Rayelle Ross led the Trojans (3-6, 1-4 CCAC) with 15 points apiece, while shooting a combined 7-for-12 from beyond the three-point arc. Sarina Falvo also finished in double figures, with ten points on the day.

Getting off to a slow start, the Trojans found themselves trailing 19-2 after the first six minutes of the game. PUC's Darien Thompson would hit a three at the 4:07 mark of the first quarter to give the Peregrines (8-2, 4-1 CCAC) their biggest lead of the day, as Trinity would climb back in the game in the second quarter.

Trinity closed the gap to single digits by scoring nine unanswered points between the first and second periods, capped off by a steal and fast-break layup from Falvo with 6:52 remaining in the first half. The Trojans would pull to within three points at 26-23, with Parris Bryant's layup with 2:38 on the clock. In all, Trinity out-scored the Peregrines 18-11 in the second period, and went into the halftime break trailing 31-25.

The Trojans were unable to take the lead in the third period, but kept the score close; Purdue-Calumet reclaimed a double-digit advantage on another three-pointer from Thompson with 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Three-pointers from Bracun and Ross made it a five-point game with 2:47 to play, 60-55. The Peregrines responded with a quick four points on their next two possessions, and despite another pair of threes from the Trojans, Purdue-Calumet would hold on for the win.

Ross' four three-pointers made is the most by any Trojan this season, and a career-high for the junior guard. Bracun finished with a team-leading six steals on the day, also the most for TIU this year.

The Trojans return home this Thursday night, December 10, when they host Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.) in non-conference play. Tipoff from Van Dixhorn Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
