NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Freshman guard
Jeremy Carlyle led the way with a career-high 32 points, but a second half run put the host Holy Cross Saints in front, as Trinity International suffered a 78-67 defeat Wednesday night.
Box Score | Season Stats"Our team fought so hard tonight," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts. "Jeremy was incredible, as I knew he would be. He's special, and I'm thrilled I get to coach him."
Holy Cross (8-5, 1-3 CCAC) went up by as much as eight in the first half, on a three-pointer at the 7:53 mark. The Trojans (8-5, 2-3 CCAC) responded with a 12-3 run over the next four minutes, to claim a 27-26 lead with four minutes until the halftime break. The lead would be traded back and forth three more times in the first half, with the Saints heading into the locker room with a 34-32 edge.
Trinity tied the game again in the second half, when Carlyle hit a three-pointer with 15:05 remaining, 39-39.
Caleb Kelley put TIU back in front with a three-point play to make it a 42-41 score, but the Saints would score five quick unanswered to move back in front with 13:13 to play.
The Trojans tied the game twice the rest of the way, both times on threes from Carlyle, but were unable to reclaim the lead, as the Saints earned their second win over TIU in their last two meetings in the Pfeil Center.
"We aren't using our shorthanded squad as an excuse," said Roberts. "It was tied with a few minutes to go, but our guys who played 40 minutes just ran out of gas a bit, which is to be expected.
Sean Smith is as tough as they come, and Paul [Badgley] and Scott [Garlinger] held their own as our only two bigs on the floor. Caleb made some great plays when we needed a bucket, and he deserves this opportunity."
"We're to the point where everyone who watches TIU Basketball leaves the gym appreciating how hard our guys compete, and the guys who suit up will continue to hold that standard."
Trinity wraps up their two-game road trip on Saturday, with a visit to Calumet St. Joseph. Tipoff against the Crimson Wave is set for 3:00 p.m.
