DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Trinity International held an early lead against the CCAC North Division Leaders, but with runs allowed in six different innings, the Trojans were unable to hold on, falling to the Robert Morris Eagles 9-5 on Monday afternoon at the TIU Baseball Field.
Box Score | Season Stats | CCAC StandingsTrinity out-hit the Eagles with 12 base hits to RMU's eight, but just one extra-base knock, a leadoff double from
Adam Vignola in the 8th inning. The Trojans took a one-run lead in the bottom of the 1st, with three straight two-out singles from Vignola,
A.J. Bruner, and
Jon Debowey. Robert Morris answered with two runs scored on a fielding error in the top of the 2nd to take a 2-1 advantage.
A solo home run from RMU's Keil Conway tacked on another run in the top of the 3rd, but the Trojans were able to get it back in the bottom half of the frame.
Ryan Helmeid led off with blooping single down the left field line, then moved from first to third on
Jeff Lindberg's single through the right side of the infield. Bruner then brought home Helmeid with a sac fly to make it a 3-2 Eagles lead.
Robert Morris would build their lead with a three-run 4th inning, then add another run in the top of the 5th for a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the 6th,
Andrew Grotelueschen drove in the third run of the day for the Trojans, with a sac fly to right field, scoring Lindberg.
The Eagles again kept TIU from getting too close, scoring runs in the 7th and 8th innings for a six-run advantage, 9-3. The Trojans came back with two runs in the bottom of the 8th after Vignola's leadoff double.
Joshua Crist and Jon Grotelueschen each hit two-out RBI singles, scoring Vignola and
Scott Krawiec. Trnity couldn't keep the rally going however, leaving runners in scoring position in both 8th and 9th innings.
Lindberg, Vignola, and Crist each led the Trojans with two hits apiece, as Vignola extends his reached-base streak to 17 straight games. Debowey finished 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, stretching his current hitting streak to 10 games, the longest for any Trojan this season.
TIU will be back in action Tuesday afternoon, when they host Cardinal Stritch for a CCAC doubleheader. First pitch against the Wolves from the TIU Baseball Field is set for 1:30 p.m.
