Grant Corsi and
Zach Kirschbaum led the way with 18 points apiece, after combining for just a single point before the halftime break. The Trojans (11-8) had six players finish in double figures in the night, while Kirschbaum recorded his seventh double-double of the year by pulling down 14 rebounds.
"Tonight wasn't exactly a clinic on how to play to our potential, but we're thankful to escape with a win," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts. "Credit Coach Kelly and his staff at IIT. They were hungrier than us, and their early momentum carried them throughout the game."
Sean Smith's three-pointer at the 17:30 mark of the first half edged the Trojans into the early lead, but Illinois Tech (2-13) responded with nine straight points to move in front 13-7. The Hawks would lead for the next 23 minutes, until
James Glass tied the game with a jumper with 14:51 remaining.
Both teams would trade the lead back and forth, but a
Thomas Amrine three-pointer would break a 73-73 tie with 2:12 to play. Trinity were unable to close out the game at the line, as IIT's Anthony Mosey would hit a jumper with just seconds on the clock to force the first overtime.
Trinity led 88-84 with 2:17 on the clock in the first overtime, before the Hawks would make four straight stops on the defensive end to work their way back. Kirschbaum hit two free throws to edge TIU back in front 90-88, but a game-tying jumper from Parker Joncus tied the game yet again.
Luke Mead, who nearly sank a half-court shot to win it in overtime, missed the mark on a buzzer-beating three, sending the game into the second overtime.
Amrine hit a dagger of a three-pointer with 1:10 on the clock in the second overtime, breaking a tie to put the Trojans ahead 101-98. Following the defensive stop, Smith put the game away with the final two of his ten points to grab the win.
"I'm proud of our guys and their resiliency," said Roberts. "We just weren't popping the entire game, which happens to every team at some point. Different guys stepped up and made some big plays in key moments, and we needed each of them. Sean and Luke hit clutch shots, and Nate [Quilling] and D.J. continue to give us very good minutes off the bench."
Amrine finished with 13 points, despite his first field goal coming with just under three minutes to play in regulation.
Henry French collected 12 points in the win, while Smith and Glass each came off the bench with ten points.
The Trojans return home on Saturday, as they resume CCAC play with a visit from the No. 14 Olivet Nazarene Tigers. Tipoff from Van Dixhorn Arena is set for 3:00 p.m.
