JOLIET, Ill. – Trinity International came up just short in their bid for a third straight win over a nationally-ranked team, falling on the road 80-66 to the 2
nd-ranked St. Francis Saints on Saturday night.
Box Score | Season StatsThe Trojans (13-9, 6-7 CCAC) struggled to find their shot throughout the night, failing to reach the 70-point mark for just the fourth time this season. Senior
James Glass led TIU in scoring for the first time this season, posting 16 points off the bench, while
Zach Kirschbaum and
Grant Corsi each finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
"We didn't control either end of the floor tonight, and when you're playing against a great team, that doesn't cut it," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts after his team's first loss in three weeks, snapping a five-game win streak. "Credit to Saint Francis, they played well and responded any time we tried to mount a push."
The game's early lead switched back and forth over the first ten minutes;
Thomas Amrine would hit one of his two three-pointers at the 11:21 mark to put TIU in front 19-17. The Saints (19-2, 11-2 CCAC) responded with nine points over the next two minutes, as part of a 14-0 run that saw USF take a 31-19 advantage with 5:19 to play in the first half. Trinity would trim the lead back down to single digits before the halftime break and went into the locker rooms trailing 37-29.
St. Francis went on another quick rally to start the second half, scoring seven of the first eight points to go ahead 44-30 at the 17:06 mark. Three times the Trojans would cut the lead to nine points in the second half, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the night.
"Obviously the guys in our locker room are disappointed, because we don't compete for moral victories," said Roberts. "But we have a group of resilient guys who have been a joy to coach, and we'll keep fighting. We know we have a huge week ahead of us, and we'll be ready."
The Trojans have one more stop on their current three-game road trip, as TIU pays a visit to St. Xavier on Wednesday, January 27. Trinity returns to the Van Dixhorn Arena next Saturday, January 30, when they host Indiana-South Bend.
