Trojans secure win over Titans on Upward Night

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Five players finished in double figures, as Trinity International held off a tough Indiana-South Bend squad down the stretch to secure an 82-72 home victory on Saturday night.

Grant Corsi led the Trojans (14-10, 7-8 CCAC) with 17 points in front of the largest crowd inside Van Dixhorn Arena all year, as the team hosted groups involved with Upward Basketball, meeting kids and signing autographs after the game.

"Today was a great day for Trinity International University and our basketball program," TIU head coach Boomer Roberts commented after the win. "We are proud to partner with Upward Basketball, and I love how our guys spend their morning investing in the lives of those young kinds. Tonight was a big, loud, engaged croud, and we fed off their energy."

"Grant played really well, and I loved Henry [French]'s aggressiveness. Zach [Kirschbaum] and James [Glass] had another very good game controlling the paint, and Thomas [Amrine] drilled some crucial shots for us."

Zach Kirschbaum came up just short of his 11th double-double, recording 15 points and nine boards in the win. Thomas Amrine collected 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and a 4-for-8 performance from beyond the arc. Henry French added in 13 points, while James Glass led the TIU bench with ten.

A rally towards the end of the first half proved to be the difference, as both sides traded the lead six times over the first ten minutes, with neither team building more than a five-point advantage. A pair of buckets from Glass spared a 16-0 run over a five-minute span, turning a 17-15 Titan lead into a 31-17 score in favor of the Trojans. Indiana-South Bend (14-10, 7-8 CCAC) outscored Trinity 7-2 over the final 90 seconds before the break to cut into some of the deficit, but TIU would lead 37-26 at the half.

Trinity would maintain a small double-digit lead to start the second half. Amrine's three-pointer at the 11:32 mark, gave Trinity their biggest lead of the night, at 63-45. South Bend would work the lead down the rest of the way, going to the free throw line and converting on four straight possessions to make it a single-digit lead, 77-70 with 1:09 remaining.

A pair of trips to the line for Luke Mead and Corsi would run the clock out, securing Trinity their second straight win over Indiana-South Bend, after losing the first eight meetings from 2004-2014. "South Bend is a good team, but I thought we got back to playing with the joy and love we had a couple weeks back.," said Roberts. "I'm proud of our crew, including my assistant coaches, who really got our guys prepared this week."

The Trojans wrap up the quick two-game homestand  this Wednesday night, when they host the Judson Eagles. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m., with streaming video available at TIUTrojans.com.
