Kirschbaum's buzzer-beater pushes Trojans past Wolves

DEERFIELD, Ill. - Trailing by seven with two and a half minutes to play, Trinity International rallied back to defeat the Cardinal Stritch Wolves on Thursday night, as junior forward Zach Kirschbaum capped off the rally with a dramatic game-winning buzzer-beater to give the Trojans the win, 75-74.

Box Score | Season Stats

After a slight fumble of the pass from junior Grant Corsi, Kirschbaum got the shot off just in time to give the Trojans their ninth win of the season, and the third in CCAC play. Trinity (9-8, 3-6 CCAC) finished the game on a 12-4 run to earn their first victory over Cardinal Stritch since 2007.

"Man, what a great win for our guys," commented TIU head coach Boomer Roberts after the game. "That was a game no one in our locker room will ever forget. We needed to find a way to get a 'W' tonight, and our love for each other really showed."

Senior Thomas Amrine led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down seven three-pointers in the win. The Ramstein, Germany native came up just one more trey short of his career high, as well as the TIU single-game record. Kirschbaum finished with his fifth double-double as a Trojan, recording 15 points and 14 rebounds. Corsi also finished in double figures, with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

"Stritch has been the class of our league for a long time, so we knew it would be a dogfight," said Roberts. "Zach was incredible in the paint, Grant and Henry [French] has some special moments, and Thomas and Luke [Mead] showed great courage when we needed it late in the game."

The Trojans jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, thanks to three quick scores from French, but the Wolves (7-10, 5-2 CCAC) scored seven straight to quickly tie the game at 9-9. Trinity held the lead throughout much of the first half, but a 14-4 run spanning nearly seven minutes helped give Stritch a 36-33 halftime lead.

Trinity came out with the first nine points of the second half to move back in front 42-36. After the visitors responded with a pair or scores, both teams traded the lead back and forth with neither side building more than a four-point lead until Tyler Semenas put the Wolves in front 68-63 with 3:06 remaining.

Another score on the following possession gave Cardinal Stritch a 70-63 advantage, before the Trojans came back for the win.

"God's faithfulness has been on full display in our program over these last five weeks, and we're just grateful for the opportunity to compete together tonight," said Roberts. "It was a special, special night for the TIU community."

Trinity hits the road this weekend to face CCAC foe Trinity Christian on Saturday, January 9. Tipoff against the Trolls is set for 3:00 p.m.
