ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - In just the second double-overtime game in program history, a turnover during a must-score possession ended Trinity International's chance for a win, falling on the road to the Robert Morris Eagles 34-27 on Saturday afternoon.

After Robert Morris (4-2 3-0 MSFA Midwest) took the lead in the second overtime period, scoring on a third-and-7 from nine yards out, Trinity (1-6, 0-3 MSFA Midwest) suffered an interception on the first play of the drive. Tied at 24-24 with seven seconds remaining in regulation, a potential game-winning 45-yard field goal ws missed wide right.
Quarterback
J.J. Burmeister threw for a career-high 288 yards, completing 28 of 44 passes on the day. Senior wideout
Cory Windle was his favorite target, bringing in 13 catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore
Isaac Branch posted a team-high 85 rushing yards on 22 carries, with one TD.
The Trojans opened the day with a 37-yard field goal from
Jeremiah Carter, before Robert Morris responded with back-to-back touchdowns to claim a 14-3 advantage early in the second quarter. Burmeister put up Trinity's first touchdown of the day, finding Windle for a 14-yard pass with 9:51 left in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 14-10.
After both teams traded punts, the Trojans took the lead with a 97-yard, 14-play drive to go ahead 17-14. Burmeister connected with Rafael Williams for a 27-yard gain on third down, then dealt Windle his second TD reception of the day from the one-yard line. The Trojans then extended their lead late in the third quarter, when Branch punched in the team's third TD of the day from one yard out with 1:41 left in the third.
A strong kick return for Robert Morris set the Eagles up near midfield on their next drive, which resulted in a 41-yard field goal that cut into the TIU lead, 24-17. The Eagles would tie the game with 2:58 left in regulation, moving 75 yards in just five plays, highlighted by a 39-yard pass and 25-yard run.
In the first overtime, a sack on third-and-8 set Carter up with a long field goal, but the senior converted from 47-yards out, just one yard shy of his career long. Robert Morris' responding drive stalled out at the 13-yardline, giving RMU a chip-shot field goal to move into double overtime.
Defensively,
Bayley Pierson led the Trojans in tackles for the first time this season, with eight total stops. Godfrey Collins collected 1.5 tackles for loss, while
Justin Hackley registered a sack, forced fumble, and fumble recovery.
Trinity will now return home for the first time in five weeks for Homecoming Weekend; the Trojans will host the St. Xavier Cougars at Leslie Frazier Field, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.
