Fourth-quarter comeback gives Trojans third straight victory

UPLAND, Ind. - With a go-ahead touchdown in the season's final drive, Trinity International overcame a ten point deficit to earn a 17-14 road victory over the Taylor Trojans on Saturday afternoon.

Box Score

Senior wideout Cory Windle put the Trojans (4-7) on top, with a 48-yard touchdown reception from J.J. Burmeister with just over a minute to play to complete the comeback. Windle finished the day with two touchdown receptions and 107 yards on seven receptions. Burmeister posted 226 yards through the air in the victory, completing 17 of 27 passes.

Taylor (4-7) took the lead on the first drive of the day, eating up seven minutes of game time through 12 plays resulting in a four-yard touchdown pass. Offensively, Trinity got off to a slow start, with just three first downs in the first half, but the TIU defense kept things close. With Taylor driving, senior defensive back Darwin Stone grabbed his first interception of the year just outside of the TIU red zone, keeping the home team from potentially taking a two-possession lead into halftime.

Trinity would tie the game on their first drive of the second half, as Burmeister completed all five pass attempts including a 15-yard TD pass to Windle to make it a 7-7 score. Another long possession would put Taylor back on top late in the third quarter, as TU's Tim Barrett would score from 16 yards out to put the home team ahead 14-7 with 1:42 left in the third.

Senior Jeremiah Carter would connect on a 47-yard field goal, just one yard shy of his career long, to cut into the Taylor deficit with just 4:19 in regulation, 14-10. Trinity's defense came up big again, forcing a three-and-out, but the punt would pin the Trojans on their own 3-yardline with just over three minutes to play.

Burmeister again did not throw a single incomplete pass during the game-winning drive, connecting with Alex Johns-Moore and Windle in the first two plays of the possession for a combined 26 yards. On first-and-10 from just over midfield, the junior would find Windle for the game-winning touchdown.

Taylor quarterback Wils Alexander moved the ball to near midfield with two quick deep passes, but with 30 seconds remaining, Riley Schussler would force a fumble on the sack, recovered by Godfrey Collins II to seal the victory.

Jarell Carter led the defense with ten tackles, along with his sixth career interception and third of the season.

With the win, the Trojans close out the 2016 regular season by winning three straight, posting a 4-7 overall record, doubling their win total from a year ago and earning the most victories in a season since 2013.
