Trojans roll to road win over Pride

HAMMOND, Ind. - After the home team jumped out to a big lead in the opening minutes, Trinity International rallied to earn the road victory on Saturday, as five Trojans finished in double figures during an 87-73 win over Purdue-Northwest.

Box Score | Season Stats

Senior forward Zach Kirschbaum recorded his NAIA-leading 10th double-double of the season, posting a team-high 18 points and 16 rebounds in the win. Grant Corsi would collect 13 points on the day, while Jeremy Carlyle, Greg Carlyle, and Luke Mead would all finish with 12.

"Our guys continue to get tougher, as they showed a lot of resiliency tonight in another good road win," said TIU head coach Boomer Roberts. "Our pace helped us separate late in the game, and we hammered the glass, which allowed us to wear them down."

The Trojans (9-3, 3-1 CCAC) would fall behind early, after Purdue-Northwest opened the game with seven straight points. Jeremy Carlyle and Corsi would get Trinity on the scoreboard with a pair of three-pointers, and the Trojans would eventually take their first lead of the game at the 13:38 mark, with another three from Greg Carlyle

The Pride (3-6, 2-3 CCAC) responded with a three of their own on the very next possession, and would lead 22-18 with 11:57 remaining in the first half. A 15-0 run for Trinity, spanning just three minutes quickly put the Trojans in front. Four different Trojans would knock down a three-pointer in the rally, putting TIU ahead 33-22 with 7:53 remaining in the period after a three-pointer from Henry French.

Trinity would go up by as much as 15 after Donald Watkins, Jr. would score on a layup at the 2:38 mark, but Purdue would close out the half on a 10-4 run to cut into the deficit and make it a 48-39 Trojan lead going into the half.

The home team would close to within three points coming out of the break, connecting on a pair of three-pointers with 18:10 to play and cutting Trinity's advantage to just 48-45. Five straight points from Kirschbaum would pad the lead again, and the Trojans would maintain a single-digit margin until a three-pointer from Corsi at the 8:20 mark put TIU ahead 69-58 en route to the win.

"We got good minutes from T.J. Johnson, Donovan Wells, and D.J. [Watkins], and those minutes allowed Kirschbaum to dominate the second half," said Roberts. "Henry is showing that he can affect the game in so many ways, and we got very good contributions from Grant and Luke. Greg and Jeremy keep making plays on both ends, and it's getting harder and harder to keep them off the floor."

The Trojans return to Van Dixhorn Arena this Tuesday night, for a pivotal non-conference matchup. Trinity will play host to 5th-ranked Indiana-East on December 6, with tipoff set for 6:00 p.m.
