VERO BEACH, Fla. – Trinity International wrapped up their annual Florida trip on Friday, splitting their last two games with a 3-1 victory over Rochester (Mich.), before falling to Miami-Hamilton (Ohio), 9-5 at the Historic Dodgertown Invitational.
Box Scores: Rochester (Mich.) | Miami-Hamilton (Ohio) | Season StatsA.J. Bruner picked up his CCAC-leading 5th win of the season in the first game of the day, pitching all seven innings and allowing just one run while striking out five. At the plate, Jon Grotelueschen recorded his second three-hit performance in Dodgertown, going 3-for-3 while driving in two RBI, including the game-winner.
The Trojans (10-7) led the Warriors (6-7) from the 1st inning throughout, as Grotelueschen opened the game with a leadoff single. The senior advanced to third and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give Trinity the early 1-0 edge.
Trinity tacked on another run in the 2nd, after
Colt Foerch reached scoring position with a two-out double to left. Foerch then scored on the next play, when Grotelueschen singled.
Rochester nearly tied the game in the bottom of the 4th, scoring once with a two-out RBI single. With runners on the corners, the Warriors tried a double steal but were thrown at out the plate with the potential tying run.
In the top of the 6th, TIU added an insurance run with Grotelueschen's two-out double, scoring
Adam Vignola, who had gotten aboard earlier in the frame as a hit batter. The two-run lead proved to be enough, as Bruner scattered four hits over the final three innings to secure the complete-game victory.
Trinity looked to overcome an early deficit in the second game of the day, after Miami-Hamilton (4-8) hung three runs on the Trojans in the 1st inning. A five-run top of the 3rd put the Trojans in front, highlighted by
Joel Stephenson's go-ahead two-RBI single with the bases loaded.
Miami-Hamilton responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning, then took control in the bottom of the 5th. Two of the three errors committed by the Trojans in the game occurred in the 5th, helping fuel a five-run rally for Miami. The Trojans were retired in order in the 6th, and stranded one runner in the 7th, closing the door on a potential late comeback.
The Trojans return to Deerfield next week to begin CCAC play. Trinity will host the St. Xavier Cougars on Friday, March 18, for the first of a three-game set. First pitch from the TIU Baseball Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
