Trojans split with Saints in road twinbill

JOLIET, Ill. – A complete game victory for freshman pitcher Jiri Vavrusa, with the middle of the Trinity International lineup delivering at the plate, highlighted a doubleheader split for the Trojans against the St. Francis Saints on Tuesday afternoon. Trinity earned a 9-1 win over the home team in the first matchup of the day, before dropping the nightcap 8-4.

The Trojans (16-16-1, 6-9-1 CCAC) led wire-to-wire in game one, beginning when pinch runner Scott Krawiec scored on a wild pickoff attempt. Senior catcher Adam Vignola broke the game wide open in the top of the 5th, slapping a two-out single with the bases loaded to drive home three runs and give Trinity a 6-0 advantage.

After the Saints (21-21, 6-12 CCAC) broke up the shutout with a run in the 6th, Right fielder Jon Debowey cranked his fifth home run of the year, and his second in as many games, a three-run shot that put TIU ahead for good, 9-1.

Vavrusa lowered his season ERA by more than a full run with his first career complete game, throwing seven innings without an earned run. The Prague, Czech Republic native worked around seven hits and six walks, but stranded 11 runners in the victory.

In the second game of the day, the Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the 2nd, before the Trojans put together a rally in their next trip to the plate. The first four Trojans reached base in the top of the 3rd, with one run scoring on a throwing error and another on Vignola's RBI single. A.J. Bruner then drove in two more runs with a single to right, scoring Vignola and Jeff Lindberg for a 4-3 lead.

St. Francis would go on to score a run in the 3rd and 4th innings en route to five unanswered runs, while the Trojans were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Four players put in multi-hit performances in game two, led by Jon Grotelueschen's 3-for-4 day at the plate.

The Trojans return to Deerfield for a three-game series with the St. Ambrose Bees. First pitch on Friday, April 15 is set for 3:00 p.m.; a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 begins at 1:00 p.m.
