DEERFIELD, Ill. - A total of five Trojans put in three-hit performances on Tuesday, as Trinity International scored a combined 27 runs in just 12 innings of work to sweep a doubleheader against the Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.) Sabercats. Trinity overcame a five-run top of the 1st in game one to take a 9-7 victory, before taking a commanding early lead en route to an 18-5 win in game two.

Michael Balistreri went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Gomski and
A.J. Bruner each drove in three runs, including a go-ahead 2-run home run to straightaway center for Bruner in the bottom of the 4th.
Maranatha Baptist (6-16) struck first, opening with five runs on five hits in the top of the 1st. The Trojans (18-19-1) came right back, responding with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Following a leadoff error, Trinity strung together five straight base hits, highlighted by Gomski's two-RBI double, and RBI singles from
Adam Vignola and Balistreri. The Sabercats reclaimed their advantage in the 2nd, as the first two batters of the inning reached base, then scored on a double to center, giving the visitors a 7-5 lead through an inning and a half.
Trinity rebounded for good in the bottom of the 4th, beginning with a leadoff single and steal of second from Lindberg. Gomski then singled on the next play, driving home the run to make it a 7-6 score. TIU tied the game on two straight wild pitches, allowing Gomski to advance to third and then home. Bruner then put the Trojans in front with his game-winning homer with two outs in the frame.
Freshman pitcher
Jiri Vavrusa picked up his fifth win, throwing four innings and striking out five. Josh Crist came out of the pen to record his second save of the year by pitching the last three innings without allowing a run.
After coming from behind to win game one, Trinity never gave the Sabercats a chance in the nightcap, using a seven-run 1st inning to go wire-to-wire in game two. Jon Grotelueschen posted a 4-for-4 performance from the leadoff spot, scoring three runs and driving in three RBI.
Joel Stephenson was also perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Four of the first five hitters for TIU in the bottom of the first hit doubles, as the first eight Trojans reached base during the rally. Trinity tacked on one more run in the 2nd, on Stephenson's RBI single through the left side of the infield, then added three more in the 3rd to claim a 11-1 advantage.
Trinity would lead by as much as 18-1, when
Zachary Pepper scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 5th, before Maranatha rebounded to score four times in the top of the 6th. The Sabercats were unable to avoid the run rule however, as the Trojans closed out the win in seven innings.
Justin VanderNaald earned his first career win, in his first appearance on the mound this season. The junior allowed just one hit over the 3rd and 4th innings, striking out three and walking one.
The Trojans will step back into conference play tomorrow afternoon, when they host the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave. First pitch in Wednesday's doubleheader is set for 1:30 p.m.
