T.J. Johnson led the Trojans (16-3, 8-1 CCAC) with a career-high nine rebounds in the win.
"This win showcased what our guys are about - toughness, a relentless pursuit, and a strong belief in one another," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts. "TCC made some incredible shots look easy, but our guys stayed the course. We took care of the ball, hammered the O-boards, and made a lot of winning plays."
The Trojans jumped out to a commanding 15-4 lead in the opening five and a half minutes, with six points from
Grant Corsi, who finished with 16 points overall. Trinity Christian (5-12, 2-8 CCAC) would immediately respond with 11 points of their own, to even the score at at 11:35 mark, 15-15. Ten straight points towards the end of the half would give the Trojans their largest lead of the night with 1:19 to play before the break, at 40-27 on a Corsi layup.
Trinity Christian would cut the deficit to ten points at halftime, then use a 22-4 run spanning the opening seven minutes of the second half, giving the visitors their first lead of the day, 54-46. The Trojans bounced back to tie the game at 56-56 on Corsi's layup with 10:27 to play, but were unable to move back in front until nearly the five-minute mark, when Kirschbaum scored to go up 70-69.
From that point, the lead would be handed back and forth two more times before TCC's Trey Johnson went 3-for-4 over two trips to the free throw line, tying the game at 78-78. Both teams had looks at potential game-winning three-pointers, but neither side connected, sending the contest into overtime.
In three different occasions in the extra session, Trinity Christian would hit a three-pointer to take the lead, including Caleb Jonkman's trey with 42 seconds remaining that put the Trolls on top 91-88.
Luke Mead would get to the foul line, converting two and making it a one-point game. The Trojans would then regain possession after an intentional foul and two missed free throws from the Trolls, setting up Carlyle's game-winner.
"T.J. [Johnson] gave us great energy, Greg [Carlyle], Sean [Smith], and Luke made big shots, and Grant and Henry [French] kept us focused," said Roberts. "Our guys feel comfortable in late game situations, and Jeremy made another huge play late. It sounds like a broken record, but this team is a blast to coach. They've worked so hard for this, so I'm happy they get to see the fruits of their labor."
With the win, the Trojans earn their tenth consecutive victory, the longest win streak for the program since the 2014-15 season (Dec. 20-Jan. 28).
The Trojans have a full week before their next test, when they hit the road and face the Olivet Nazarene Tigers. Tipoff from Bourbonnais is set for Saturday, January 14, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
