Trailing by a point with 2.5 seconds left, senior
Henry French grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled on the potential go-ahead putback. French then put Trinity (24-4, 17-2 CCAC) in ahead with two clutch free throws to secure the win.
"What a gutsy win for our basketball family," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts after the game. "This moment is all about our six seniors and what they have done for this University. They have taken our program to new heights, and done it in a way that honors God."
Three of those seniors finished in double figures, as
Zach Kirschbaum picked up his 21st double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Luke Mead led the team with 16 points thanks to a perfect 8-for-8 performance from the free throw line, while
Grant Corsi scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half to help put the Trojans over the top. Sophomore
Jeremy Carlyle also posted double figures, coming off the bench to score 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Trinity came out of the gate on all cylinders, scoring the game's first 12 points in two minutes of play. Cardinal Stritch (13-15, 9-9 CCAC) battled back, pulling to within a point on Carlos Knox's three-pointer at the 9:38 mark of the first half, 20-19. The Trojans held onto the lead until a 7-0 run by the Wolves late in the second half tied the game at 73-73, and Matt Reinke's three-pointer with 2:01 to play gave the visitors their first advantage, 78-77.
Two free throws from
Jeremy Carlyle edged the Trojans back out in front, but Knox's layup-and-1 put Stritch ahead 81-79 at the 1:15 mark. Carlyle would make the same play on the other end of the floor to go back in front, but Reinke's layup with 24 seconds remaining gave the Wolves an 83-82 edge before French would grab the win at the free throw line.
"[Our seniors] made big plays tonight in a very physical game, and I was proud of the way all our guys competed," said Roberts. "This is as fun a group as I've ever been around, and it's a joy to be their coach. We will learn from tonight as we move forward, and we need to keep staying focused on what is directly in front of us."
With one week remaining in the regular season, Trinity will step outside of league play with a trip to Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday, February 14. Tipoff against the Sabercats is set for 7:00 p.m.
