BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- The Trinity International University baseball team played its home opener on Wednesday afternoon as they welcomed the Lincoln Christian Lions to campus. TIU and LCU previously played just a few days earlier on Friday, October 4 in Lincoln, where the Trojans swept both games.
Like they had done five days earlier in Lincoln, the Trojans put on an offensive display, sweeping the doubleheader over the Lions.
In game one, Sam Willis pitching six solid innings and held the Lions scoreless before Nick Venegas closed out the game in the seventh en route to a 10-0 shutout. The Trojans scored in every inning before they blew it open in the sixth with four runs on an RBI single by Matt Latimer, and a three-run home run by Blake Lazaris.
Game two got off to a rough start as TIU did not score until the fifth. That concern quickly evaporated as the Trojans dropped eight runs on LCU in the inning on six hits. Jio Ledesma started for the Trojans and only lasted two innings after giving up a run in the first. Mitch Apple took to the mound and posted an impressive four innings of two run, three hit ball before Eric Garcia closed out the game in the seventh with a scoreless seventh.
Riding a four-game winning streak, the Trojans return to action on Friday, October 9 as they host the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils at 3:00PM, as part of a three game weekend series.
