LINCOLN, Ill. --- The Trinity International University baseball team took on the Lincoln Christian Lions on the road on Friday afternoon in a fall doubleheader. TIU came away with the sweep in the two games to pick up their first win of the season, as well as the first win for head coach Shane Gardner at TIU.
In their first game with the Lions, Kurtis Sippy got the ball to start on the mound for the Trojans, pitching fourth and a third innings. Right fielder Emmanuel Andujar led the team with two hits on the day, including a run scored and a run batted in. Mitch Apple pitched two and two-thirds innings of relief to help the Trojans escape with their first win of the season, 4-2.
In game two, Nick Venegas took to the bump to start for TIU. After surrendering an earned run and three hits, Ian Ryan entered the game in relief. In the third inning, the Trojans blew the game open with a five run frame backed by four singles and three drawn walks. After another strong fourth with another four runs scored, Skyler Janko pitched a flawless seventh inning with two strikeouts to finish of the 10-1 TIU win.
The Trojans return to action on Wednesday, October 9 as they play their first games at home on the TIU campus, welcoming Lincoln Christian for another doubleheader. First pitch of the opening game is set for 1:00 PM with game two to follow.
