ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. —- The Trinity International University Trojans men's soccer team took on the Robert Morris Eagles on Saturday afternoon in their final match of the 2019 season. The 6-8-3 Trojans entered the match hoping to end the year on a win and defeat the Eagles after losing to them a season ago.
The game started off level as both teams showed possession, but RMU outshot the Trojans 8-2, but couldn't find the net as there were not many shots on goal. The first half ended 0-0 with the Trojans in a comfortable situation but needing an attacking presence.
The second half started out with RMU dominating the Trojans after a goal in the 51st minute from Matthias Muerkle would put the Eagles ahead 1-0. RMU would find the back of the net again in the 60th minute after a good build up play found Dean Groen on an empty net for an easy tap in to extend the lead.
The Trojans would struggle to find the back of the net, but a collision in the box from goalkeeper Fabio Beyer would take down Josiah Fuchs and would be issued a red card as well as awarding the Trojans a penalty kick. Senior Luke Stell stepped up to take the penalty shot in the 90th minute and buried it in the bottom left corner, but The Trojans could not rally to find another goal before time would expire giving the Eagles the 2-1 win.
TIU ends the 2019 campaign with a 6-9-3 overall record, and 2-7-3 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) with 12 goals for and 28 against in conference. The Trojans also had four shutout wins on the year, with two in conference. TIU finishes 10th in the CCAC, but will look to compete in the tournament next year.
