Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ybarra's career night lifts TIU past Tigers

WYOMING, Mich. --- The Trinity International University women's basketball team took to the floor on Monday night as they battled the Tigers of Grace Christian University in non-conference action. After a big win over Calumet College of St. Joseph a week earlier, TIU looked to extend their winning streak to four games.

After falling into a small deficit in the opening minutes, the Trojans dug their way out of an eight point hole to pull ahead of their opponents by as much as two points. TIU would struggle on the night with 25 turnovers, which helped the Tigers re-take the lead, 18-16 at the end of the first period.

In the second, with Krystal Walker attacking from inside and Kassandra Ybarra from beyond the arc, the Trojans retook the lead using a 22-7 run in the period. GCU was held to just 14% shooting from the field as TIU jumped ahead by 12 at the halftime break, 38-26.

The second half quickly became a defensive battle as both teams held one another in check with a low scoring half. Both the Trojans and Tigers would rely greatly on their opponent's turnovers, with TIU outscoring GCU 19-17 off of turnovers. While the defensive struggle continued, the Tigers cut the Trojan lead to just eight with TIU leading 48-40 entering the final frame.

The fourth quarter was a challenge for the Trojans as they only completed three shots in the period. However, nine free throw attempts aided TIU down the stretch as the Tigers looked to close gap. With Taylor Hibicke and Dana Percival at the line, TIU was able to hold off GCU's attempt at a comeback, holding on for the 60-50 victory.

Ybarra would lead the game with a career-high 26 points, as well as ten rebounds, two assists and eight steals in the win. Hibicke would notch 14 points and six boards, while Walker recorded eight points and eight rebounds.

TIU returns to the floor after the holiday break on Friday, January 3 as they visit the Lincoln Christian Lions. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
