WHEELING, Ill. - After a doubleheader sweep over Robert Morris University on Friday evening the TIU Softball team looked to continue their momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. The Trojans earned a DH split with Roosevelt, suffering a 7-3 loss in game one before a 2-1 walkoff victory over on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans offense struggled to piece together in hits in the opening game of the series which led to a 7-3 defeat to the Lakers.
Despite dropping the opening game the Trojans got an outstanding pitching performance from Senior
Taylor Carli, who fired 7 innings, allowing just 5 hits and allowed no earned runs.
The two teams found themselves in a scoreless battle through five innings, but it was the Lakers who jumped out to the early advantage. RU took advantage of a two out walk, whihc was folowed by a stolen base and a Trojan error that sent RU out to a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 7th inning the Trojans offense came to life, as TIU tallied four straight hits to set themselves up for a chance to win.
Sara Grygus,
Tenley Bozzi, and
Jessica Vroman all singled to load the bases. With the game on the line Freshman
Madison Lenzke drove the first pitch of the at bat to the left center field wall, scoring Grygus and Bozzi to send TIU to a much needed CCAC victory.
The Trojans will look to continue their strong play on Wednesday when they travel to Crown Point, Ind. to take on Calumet St. Joseph.
