BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- The Trinity International University women's basketball team took on the Governors State Jaguars on Saturday afternoon at Van Dixhorn Arena in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action. GSU won the first meeting of the season back on November 16 by a score of 65-49 in University Park. Coming off a tough loss to Olivet Nazarene earlier in the week, TIU looked to get back on track with a much needed win.
Things started out slow for the Trojans, who notched only four points as a team in the opening quarter. Midway through the second, TIU found their momentum as Krystal Walker and Alina Jahkne were able to break through the Jaguar defense for easy shots in the paint. A Dana Percival layup with 1:29 to go in the half would give the Trojans their first lead of the day before GSU tied the game in the final second to send the game to a 26-26 tie at the halftime break.
TIU opened the first few minutes of the second half with a layup by Kassandra Ybarra and a pair of Percival free throws. GSU would then find their shot from mid-range and re-take control of the game in the third, opening up an 11-point lead heading into the final period.
The Trojans slowly chipped away at the Jaguars large lead by taking control of the boards after missed shots on both ends of the floor. A Taylor Hibicke layup with under ten seconds to go in regulation would pull TIU within one point, however GSU was able to seal the game with a free throw to hand the Trojans their second straight loss, 59-57.
Jahnke led the Trojans with 13 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two blocked shots. Hibicke and Walker both recorded 11 point games, while Ybarra notched seven points, six boards, and four assists in the loss.Â
TIU returns to the floor on Wednesday, January 15 as they visit the Indiana Northwest Redhawks in CCAC play in Gary. The Trojans won their first meeting with the Redhawks at home on November 13 by a score of 66-50 when IUNW was ranked 25th in the nation. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
