Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

TIU holds off Wolves, 69-66

BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- The Trinity International University women's basketball team opened up a two-game home stand on Wednesday night as they welcomed the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch to Van Dixhorn Arena in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play. Following a tough loss at Robert Morris last weekend, the Trojans looked to get back on track with a needed home victory.

TIU had trouble shooting the ball in the first few minutes as CSU opened up an early lead behind the solid shooting of Jalah Harris. After a Dana Percival three-point shot and Alina Jahnke layup, the Trojans tied the game at 10 a piece before Harris and Gal Dahan would extend the Wolves lead back to six at the end of the first quarter, 19-13.

Jahnke opened up the second frame with a layup, followed by a Carly Scheblo three to cut the game back to a single possession as TIU looked to keep pace with their opponents. In a back and forth that kept the Trojans moving the ball and defend a high shooting Wolves team, TIU was able to pull within four just before the halftime break on a Taylor Hibicke layup inside. At the halftime break, CSU led the game 31-27.

The Wolves stretched their lead to eight in the first two minutes of play in the second half before the Trojans went to work inside the paint and at the free throw line. After a Breleigh Gula layup, and a pair of Scheblo free throws, a Scheblo steal and basket by Krystal Walker tied the game at 39. TIU would grab the lead just a few seconds later on a Hibicke steal and a pair of free throws by Walker. The Trojans would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the night.

TIU would force 15 CSU turnovers and come away with ten steals on the night as part of the defensive attack against the Wolves. Despite CSU's game-high 31 points, it was TIU's rebounding on both sides of the ball and seven baskets from beyond the arc that helped seal the three-point win for the Trojans, 69-66. The victory snaps a 12-game losing streak to Cardinal Stritch dating back to the 2011-2012 season, when TIU defeated the Wolves at home.

Scheblo's 18 points, three rebounds, and four assists led the Trojans in the win, while Hibicke and Jahnke both notched 14-point games. Off the bench, Walker recorded seven points, five boards, and four assists, as Percival and Gula each scored six points.

The Trojans return home on Saturday, January 25 as they host the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees at 1:00PM. Free pizza will be given out to the first 100 students at the gate.
