TIU opens up play at the Spring Games in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Trinity International University softball team kicked off their ten game slate of their spring break trip on Friday afternoon as they took on the St. Thomas University (FL) Bobcats and Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars in central Florida as part of the Spring Games.

In their opening game against the Bobcats, Alyssa Frey took the mound for TIU, after posting a winning decision in her last game on January 31 against Robert Morris. After STU scored the opening run of the game in the first innings, the Trojans struck back in a big way as Madison Lenzke went deep for her first home run of her collegiate career to left field in the top of the second.

Fighting through tough at bats by St. Thomas, TIU kept the game tied up until the fourth inning, when STU scored three runs off Frey, all unearned. The Trojans were able to make the final inning of play competitive with Grace Schmidt driving in Gina Loy from third base as TIU racked up three hits. However, with the bases loaded, the Trojans were unable to score again as they dropped their opening game of the week, 4-2.

In the second game of the afternoon, Trinity sent Hailey Baker to mound against Mount Vernon Nazarene. After a scoreless first frame, the Cougars struck first with a run in the top of the second. The Trojans would struggle to put the ball into play as they faced tough opposition on the mound in MVNU's Macee Marcum.

The Cougars would scratch three more runs across home plate in the top of the sixth before the Trojans could score their first run of the game when a Lauren Neveau sacrifice fly to left scored Gina Loy from third base. TIU would drop their second game of the day by a final score of 4-1.

The Trojans return to the diamond on Saturday morning as they take on Spring Arbor University (MI) at 10:15AM (EST), followed by the University of Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines at 2:45PM (EST).
