KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Trinity International University softball team began their third day of action at the Spring Games in central Florida on Monday afternoon as they battled the Siena Heights University Saints and 12th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats. After splitting their games on Friday afternoon, TIU looked to put together another strong performance against a pair of tough opponents.
Alyssa Frey got the start for Trinity in the opening game of the afternoon against Saints, coming off a win in her last start against Spring Arbor on Friday. Despite only giving up one run and striking out six batters, Frey walked four Saints in five innings of work, with the game's only run coming in the bottom of the second, when SHU scored on an RBI single with the bases loaded. Hailey Kruiger, Grace Schmidt, Britney Knox, and Dana Percival would each record a hit in the 1-0 loss.
In game two against Indiana Wesleyan, Hailey Baker took the mound looking for her first win after recording two losses in her only two appearances this season. The high-powered Wildcats jumped on the Trojans early, scoring ten runs off of two TIU errors and two multi-run home runs in the first innings.Â
Despite falling behind early, Trinity went to work trying to chip away at the large deficit. After Brooke Heraty and Lauren Neveau both walked to open the bottom of the second inning, Gina Loy singled to load the bases with one out, allowing Halle Parish to drive Hearty in from third base on a sacrifice fly.Â
Hearty would double in the bottom of the third, scoring Knox from second to give TIU their second run of the game. IWU would add six runs in the top of the fourth off of Grace Schmidt, who replaced Baker on the mound after the first inning. The Trojans would respond with three runs of their own, with Schmidt bringing Danielle Dayley home on an RBI single, and Madison Lenzke scoring Schmidt and Kruiger on a two-RBI double. The game ended with the final score of 17-5 in favor of the Wildcats after the fifth inning by virtue of IWU leading by eight runs.
The Trojans return to action on Tuesday morning as they take on the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers at 10:15AM (EST), followed by the Cleary University Cougars at 12:30PM (EST).
