Baker picks up first win; Trojans win two on final day in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Trinity International University softball team wrapped up play at the Spring Games in central Florida on Wednesday afternoon as they battled the Bethel College Pilots and Briar Cliff University Chargers. Riding a five-game losing streak, the Trojans looked to find success in their final day under the sun.

Beginning the day against the Pilots, TIU handed the reigns to Hailey Baker on the mound in search of her first win of the season. After a week of struggling to put the ball in play, Trinity brought the heat with their bats.

Dana Percival led off the top of the second inning with a single, allowing Alyssa Frey to hit the first home run of her collegiate career to give the Trojans an early 2-0 lead. After Hailey Kuriger reached base on a fielder's choice and Lauren Neveau singled, Grace Schmidt's RBI single gave Trinity a three run lead.

Despite surrendering one run to the Pilots in the fifth inning, Baker pitched one of the best games of the early season, striking out three batters on 86 pitches. Frey entered the game in the bottom of the seventh to record the final out to pick up her first save of the season and give the Trojans the 3-1 victory.

In the second game of the day, TIU continued it's offensive output, dominating the Briar Cliff lineup. Neveau scored the first run of the game with an RBI double scoring Kuriger after she drew a leadoff walk. Trinity took advantage of four errors by the Charger defense as Briar Cliff used five different pitchers in the game on short rest.

After a three run first inning, the Trojans broke the game wide open in the third. With Percival being hit by a pitch, Schmidt and Frey scored a pair of unearned runs after Brooke Heraty reached first base on an error by the Charger shortstop. Britney Knox scored Percival on an RBI single, and Halle Parish would notch an RBI double and score another run to give TIU a 7-0 lead after three frames.

Trinity scored four more runs in the fourth inning in a game that saw Alyssa Frey pick up her third win of the season, Schmidt record three hits and three runs, and a season-high 11 hits in an 11-0 rout of the Chargers. This was the first game since April 12, 2019 where TIU scored 11 runs in a victory.

The Trojans return to the field for their home opener at the Heritage Park Athletic Complex in Wheeling on Wednesday, March 18 as they host the Huntington College Foresters in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00PM.
