UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. --- The TIU women's basketball team took to the road for the second time this week as they visited the Governors State Jaguars on Saturday afternoon in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). Coming off a tough loss on Wednesday night at Olivet Nazarene, the Trojans looked to rebound and earn their first win in league play.
Trinity's offense struggled out of the gate early as the Jaguars jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Backed by three first quarter blocks by Alina Jahnke, the Trojans were able to keep the game close, but 12 first half turnovers led to GSU finding the basket in the paint. Both teams defended the three-point line well in the first 20 minutes of play with just three combined baskets from beyond the arc, with both teams shooting under 35% from the floor. TIU was able to draw contact in the second quarter to find their way to the free throw line to cut into the GSU lead and head to the locker room trailing by only one point, 28-27.
For the first few minutes of the second half, the Trojans were able to contain the Jaguar offense, but couldn't pull ahead. Governors State would then find their stride and jump back in control with a 10-1 scoring run, fueled by points off TIU turnovers. While the Trojans were able to chip away and cut it back down to just a three point deficit within four minutes to go, GSU was able to secure control of the game by taking command of offensive rebounding off their own missed shots, holding on for a 58-49 win and handing the Trojans their second straight conference loss.
Jahnke led the Trojans with a 19 point, ten rebound double-double with six blocks in the loss. Carly Scheblo and Brittany Gafare each scored eight points, while Taylor Hibicke scored six points.
