DAVENPORT, Iowa --- After securing their first home victory last weekend and winning their only two contested non-conference games this season, the TIU football team hit the road on Saturday as they opened up play in the Midwest League of the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) at Brady Street Stadium against the Saint Ambrose Fighting Bees. Seeking their third straight win, the Trojans were eager to start league play against a quality SAU program.
The Bees would be the first to crack the scoreboard on the afternoon as T'Nahleg Hall put SAU ahead 7-0 on a 12-yard touchdown run. With starting quarterback Derrick Taylor knocked out of the game early due to injury, the Trojans turned to Nolan Brammer to lead the offense. Early in the second quarter, Brammer connected with receiver Deon Cook for a 35-yard touchdown to tie the game at seven apiece.
Saint Ambrose would jump ahead with two additional second quarter touchdown drives, before Brammer again found Cook for a 43-yard score to cut the score to a one possession game. With under a minute to go in the first half, Brammer notched his third touchdown pass of the day, finding Marc Wallace from eight yards out, forcing the game into a 21-21 tie at halftime.
The Bees would turn up the heat on the TIU offense in the second half, slowing down Trinity dramatically with three turnovers. After giving up four SAU touchdowns in the half, the Trojans were able to add a final score in the final minute of regulation as Taylor returned to the game to hit Cook for a 37-yard touchdown, capping a 49-28 loss for the Trojans.
Brammer ended the day with 331 passing yards and three total touchdown passes. Cook totalled 222 receiving yards with three scores on ten catches, while Javier Acosta anchored the TIU running game with 34 yards on six carries. On defense, Corey Watkins posted ten total tackles, including nine individually. Judel Vilus, Le'Trey Bond, and Gabriel Jamieson each also recorded one tackle for loss each.
