ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. --- The TIU women's volleyball team took the short trip over to Arlington Heights on Saturday as they faced the Roosevelt Lakers at the Athletics & Convocation Center in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action. Coming off aÂ
commanding 3-0 win over Governors State on Friday night, TIU looked to post wins on consecutive nights and extend their fast 7-3 start to the season.
Starting each set of the matches, the Trojans and Lakers traded points back-and-forth before TIU would establish momentum. Using a 4-0 run in the first set with kills by Jazmin Coronado and Grace Mauersberger, Trinity finished strong thanks to a set of attack errors by Roosevelt to take the first frame, 25-18. After a strong start by the Lakers in the second, TIU again rallied back, this time with Matty Hawkins on the attack and in defense of the net, blocking a number of Roosevelt shots to help Trinity take a close 25-23 win.
The Lakers would jump out to a fast 10-4 start in the third set, however the Trojans offense led by Brianna Torres and Madeline Decker quickly erased their deficit, putting TIU back into contention for a sweep. Despite Roosevelt extending the set, Trinity capitalized off the Lakers late errors to secure the final frame 29-27, and complete the three-set sweep.
Hawkins led the afternoon with 13 kills in the win and three total blocks. Anna Skrzpchak notched 37 assists, while Jaylyn Freeman recorded 15 digs on defense.
