BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- After seeing their 14 match winning streak in five-set matches snapped on Thursday night, the TIU women's volleyball team returned home to Van Dixhorn Arena on Saturday afternoon as they hosted the St. Francis Fighting Saints in conference play.
Trinity and St. Francis have made several competitive matches in the past few years, and Saturday was no different. TIU would ride 13 kills to a comfortable 25-16 win in the first set, but it would get much closer there after. The Saints would respond with a strong second set performance with the Trojans committing eight attack errors. After trailing by two points, 19-17, USF would close strong and take the frame 25-19.
In the third, the Trojans played their best volleyball with minimal mistakes. Both teams engaged in multiple long rallies, but it would be the Saints who fell short on capitalizing on the long points. With a heavy attack presence at the net, TIU held on to take the third set 25-20. In the fourth, Trinity would have to rally from four points down to avoid a fifth set. Thanks to a strong afternoon at the service line and a set of kills by Matty Hawkins and Brianna Torres, TIU would force the set into extra time, where the Trojans came up big, winning 28-26 to claim the match 3-1.
Hawkins led TIU with 12 kills, plus three solo blocks in the win, while Torres notched 11 kills, three service aces and 22 digs. Madison Feagans recorded 42 assists, as Jaylyn Freeman notched a game-high 24 digs. Feagans and Emma Galleos each recorded two service aces as well.
