JOLIET, Ill. --- The TIU football team visited the Fighting Saints of St. Francis on Saturday afternoon in Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League play. Coming off a home loss last weekend against Saint Ambrose, the Trojans looked to pick up their first win of the season.
The Saints would take five minutes off the clock on their opening drive of the game, resulting in a Ravon Johnson touchdown reception from Joey Passo with a successful two-point conversion. Perre Barbarin put St. Francis up two scores as he found the end zone from five yards out to give USF a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Trinity would crack the scoreboard late in the second as quarterback Nolan Brammer connected with Khalid Humphreys on a 23-yard touchdown pass. St. Francis would score their third touchdown of the half in the final second as Eric Maffie found Daniel Goetsch in the end zone for six points, giving the Saints a 21-6 halftime lead.
After a largely quiet third quarter, the Trojans scored the only points of the period as Brammer found Derek Lowe for a two-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to nine points. St. Francis responded with just over five minutes to go in regulation with Passo finding Johnson on a 25 yard touchdown pass to take a 28-12 lead on TIU.
One minute and fifteen seconds after USF scored, the Trojans quickly moved down the field with Brammer connecting with Gino Mastandrea for a 25 yard touchdown and a successful two-point conversion with Brammer finding Nicholas Godfrey in the end zone. Despite the late push, TIU would be unable to get another chance as St. Francis held onto the ball for the remaining four minutes of play as the Trojans would fall short, 28-20.Â
Brammer ended the afternoon with 344 yards in the air on 27 completions and three passing touchdowns. In addition to Mastandrea's seven catches, 136 yards and one touchdown, Deon Cook led the Trojans with 142 yards on eight receptions. On defense, Logan Shears and Kemon Reese recorded 12 and 11 total tackles respectively, with one sack each.
