BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- The TIU men's soccer team returned home to Schartner Field on Saturday afternoon as they took on the Cougars of Saint Xavier University in their 2021 home and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener. After a third straight 3-0 at Bethel (IN) on Wednesday night, the Trojans were eager to open league play and play their first match of the year on home soil.
Trinity would have early troubles maintaining control over their possessions as the Cougars played tough defense. SXU would strike first in the 14th minute as Ricardo Avalos scored on a wide shot into the net past TIU freshman goalkeeper Armin Mahmutovic, making his second career start.Â
After a slow offensive start in the first half, TIU finally broke through on their attack as Josiah Joseph scored Trinity's first goal of the 2021 season in the 63rd minute to tie the game up at one. Despite a strong second half that saw the Trojans apply continuous pressure on the Cougars' box, TIU was unable to score the go-ahead goal in regulation, sending the match to overtime.
The Trojans would get several chances in the first overtime period, but came up short in finding the back of the net. While all the momentum seemed to swing TIU's way it would be Avalos again for Saint Xavier, who shot on goal in the 105th minute deflected off the finger tips of Mahmutovic into the net for the game-winning goal, handing the Trojans the heartbreaking 2-1 loss in double overtime.Â
