Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Trojans win third straight in 3-1 win at Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- The TIU women's soccer team wrapped up their two-match road trip in southern California on Monday afternoon, as they took on the Lions of Vanguard University at the Vanguard Soccer Complex. Coming off a 4-0 shutout of San Diego Christian on Saturday, the Trojans looked to string a third straight win together against a tough Lions team that entered the season receiving votes in the NAIA preseason top 25 poll.

Vanguard controlled the majority of the possessions throughout the first half, allowing few opportunities for Trinity on offense. TIU would take advantage of their opportunities, starting with Payton Siragusa in the 39th minute, who put the Trojans ahead 1-0 after a break away pass.

For the third consecutive game, TIU scored within the first three minutes of the second half as Lauren Corral, on her birthday, netted the Trojan's second goal of the day off a deflected pass of an opposing Vanguard player in the 46th minute for a two goal lead. Vanguard would respond with a goal from Emily Miramontes on an Allie Griffith assist to cut the Trinity lead in half.

Kate Jung would give TIU their two goal lead back in the 60th minute to put the blue and white up 3-1. Thanks to four saves by goalkeeper Sarah Davis, the Trojans would preserve their lead and pick up their third straight win.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • Monday's win was TIU's first ever against the Lions. Vanguard still leads the all-time series 2-1.

  • Trinity's victory marks the third consecutive season the Trojans have recorded a win against a team ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA top 25 poll. Vanguard was receiving votes in this year's preseason poll, while Olivet Nazarene received votes during their meeting with TIU during the 2020 season, and Trinity Christian came in at #17 in 2019.

  • The Trojans improve to 3-3-1 against teams in the Golden State Athletic Conference all-time with today's win.

  • Payton Siragusa's goal in the 39th minute was her second of the season, and fifth of her career. She is now tied with Kailynd Tubb and Abigail Olsson for the most career goals among active TIU players.

  • Siragusa's first half goal marked the first time this season Trinity has scored in the first 45 minutes of play.

  • Lauren Corral's goal to lead off the second half was her first of the 2021 campaign, and second of her career.

  • Freshman Kate Jung's 60th minute goal was the first of her college career.
