Trojans extend unbeaten streak to three with clean-sheet victory over Calumet

WHITING, IN— On a chilly Wednesday afternoon across the Indiana border, the Trojans bested the Calumet College of St. Joseph Crimson Wave in dominant fashion, claiming a 4-0 victory.

It didn't take long for the Trojans to pull ahead in the conference bout, as defender Zach Mawdsley, bearer of the captain's armband for the blue-and-white, showcased his versatility by tallying the opening goal of the afternoon just 87 seconds in. The score was Mawdsley's fourth of the year, topping his previous career high of three in 2019 with two games remaining on the schedule. The Trojans continued to pressure Calumet throughout the opening 45, launching a staggering 15 shot attempts and 10 shots on goal toward the Crimson Wave defense in the half, but didn't break through again until the 29th minute. It was then that talented transfer Jesus Ramos banged home his second goal as a Trojan, taking advantage of a slick feed from Maqiis Haywood to double the Trinity advantage. Still not content, the Trojans seemed to have surely extended the margin to 3-0 when a Calumet foul resulted in a Haywood penalty chance, but the Trojan winger made things interesting, watching his original attempt saved before alertly pouncing on the rebound and tapping it home to secure the three-goal lead at halftime.

The Trojans continued their onslaught in the second half, and they reaped the rewards of their take-no-prisoners mentality when a feed from Parteet Chahal made its way to Jorge "Pops" Vasquez, who tallied his third goal of the season and the 10th of his long and successful Trojan career. With the lead firmly within their grasp, the Trojans continued to play lockdown defense no matter who was on the pitch, using a total of 21 players in the match as they saw the 4-0 shutout through as the final whistle blew.

It was an impressive all-around effort for the Trojans, who complimented their diverse offensive exploits (four different goal-scorers in Mawdsley, Ramos, Haywood, and Vasquez) with stifling resistance on the opposite end all afternoon. The Trojan defensive unit, headlined by Mawdsley, Ramos, Jamin Kuepfer, and Caleb Wells, only allowed three shots on goal and just two corners, and Trojan goalkeeper Armin Mahmutovic had the answer on every one of the few chances he was called upon to handle, salting away the Trojans' sixth clean sheet victory of the campaign. The impressive victory continues a remarkable season that many thought unlikely for a Trojan team that won just three matches in 2021. After losing five in a row, the Trojans are back on the horse with a three-match unbeaten streak that has them two games over .500 heading into the homestretch of the regular season.

The Trojans (8-6-1) will look to knock off another conference opponent when they square off with St. Ambrose on Saturday back home at Schartner Field.
