Trojans fall in straight sets Tuesday night to IU South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind.—Last evening the Trojans made a trip down south to face CCAC top-five opponent Indiana University at South Bend in their latest conference clash. Trinity kept it close the entire match, but ultimately dropped to the Titans in the initial three sets.

TIU struggled to keep up with the Titans as they surged ahead 7-0 before Coach Ward called for a time out. Out of the break veteran outside hitter Lana Vujosevic landed her first kill of the night before the two sides began trading points. Still behind 8-15, Trinity grabbed consecutive points with kills by Brianna Torres, another by Vujosevic and Nadia Wheeler to dampen IUSB's lead. Benefiting from a couple of attacking errors by the Titans, the Trojans came within two points of their rival before South Bend burst forward again. Scrapping to put something together, Trinity notched a couple more kills and Desirae Pisano then Anna Skrzypchak each buried a service ace to bring the Trojans with three points at 20-23 but the Titans closed out the first set with a five point victory.

At the start of the second set, the Trojans and Titans went to battle as they traded points and services with neither team garnering more than a two point lead until Vujosevic sank back to back service aces. With TIU leading 13-10, IU South Bend called for a timeout that turned the game in their favor, landing six of the following eight points to take a one point lead. Losing steam, the Trojans wrestled to gain momentum for the remainder of the match, but fell to error as the Titans continued to climb ahead. A final surge from the Trojan attack tried to rally the troops to the set's end as Vujosevic dropped a kill followed by consecutive kills by Torres, but came up short and the Titans ended it 22-25.

Behind two sets to none, the Trojans felt the pressure going into the third set. The weight of the set only grew as the Titans once again surged forward with a big lead after going on a seven-point rally. At 5-12, TIU turned up the heat and took a five point rally of their own to cut the deficit to two points, behind kills by Vujosevic and Torres and gift errors from the Titans. A few points later, a kill by freshman Theresa Romero started another rally as the Trojans took over with a single point lead, 16-15. From there the set ended swiftly, with IU South Bend taking 10 of the next 13 points and completing their sweep.

After last night's battle, the Trojans are 20-8 and drop to 4th in conference, behind the Titans of IUSB, St. Ambrose and Saint Xavier. Trinity is back on their home court tomorrow night for their annual charity game, supporting Noami's House, while they take on the Redhawks of Indiana University Northwest.
